Museums and cultural centres in Buenos Aires
Some important museums and cultural centres managed by the City Government are listed below. Information on all these museums and their exhibitions is available on our museum web page: http://www.museos.buenosaires.gob.ar/
• Centro Cultural de Recoleta (Junín 1930, Recoleta). A multidisciplinary arts space in the centre of Recoleta boasting art and photography exhibitions, music festivals and shows, a cinema and arts workshops for students.
• Usina del Arte (Agustin R. Caffarena 1, La Boca). A handsomely-restored former electricity factory, the Usina’s modern auditoria have world-class acoustics. Classical, tango, Latin American folk and jazz concerts take place daily. Art and photography exhibitions are also held here and the centre is a venue for a number of BA’s music festivals.
• Centro Cultural General San Martín (Av. Corrientes 1530, Montserrat). A giant 12-story complex with spaces devoted to theatre, dance, circus, cinema, art and photography, plus workshops and educational courses for children and students.
• Centro Metropolitano de Diseño (Algarrobo 1041, Barracas). The CMD offers up industrial and exhibition space, auditoria and laboratories mainly for designers, but also for artists, musicians and theatre companies. Amongst exhibitions and conferences, it hosts the International Festival of Design (FID).
• Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (MAMBA) (Av. San Juan 350, San Telmo). A refurbished tobacco factory, BA’s Modern Art Museum has over 6,000 works by Argentine and foreign artists. It runs workshops and seminars for children and adults on art, architecture and cinema.
• Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires (MACBA) (Av. San Juan 328, San Telmo). BA’s Museum for Contemporary Art is a beautifully restored cultural space that specializes in geometric abstraction and invests heavily in arts promotion and education to support emerging artists.
• Museo de la Ciudad (Alsina 412 & Defensa 223, San Telmo). Located right in the city’s historical centre, the Museum of the City has collections of art works, architecture and designs that chronicle the history of the city, its inhabitants, customs and architecture.
• Espacio Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575/ Rivadavia 576, San Nicolàs). Originally a library owned by the La Prensa newspaper, the Espacio Casa de la Cultura is now an arts and photography exhibition centre, which also offers free tango classes.
• Centro Cultural Dorrego (Zapiola 50, Colegiales). In the heart of the Audiovisual District, the partially open-air Centro Dorrego hosts events such as the the annual BA food fair, the Feria Masticar and the Children’s Book Fair. It is also a training and seminar venue for the Audiovisual District, and has a regular cinema programme for the public.
• Parque de la Memoria (Costanera Norte Rafael Obligado 6745, Belgrano). This 14 hectare park, a monument to the victims of state terrorism, has a continuing programme of sculptural commissions commemorating the victims of Argentina’s military junta and ‘Dirty War’ from 1976 to 1983.
